Unique Stays: Extraordinary Places to Rest Your Head

When it comes to travel, the destination is often only half the story. Where you stay can transform your trip into something truly unforgettable. If you’re looking for accommodations that go far beyond the ordinary, here are a few incredible stays that we have done that promise adventure, comfort, and a story you’ll be telling for years to come.

Why Unique Stays Matter

Travel is more than just destinations—it’s about capturing JOY in the experiences. Unique accommodations like yachts, cabooses, and glamping tents invite you to create stories. They bring an extra spark of novelty and narrative to your adventures, fostering memories you’ll carry for years to come.

1. Sleep Aboard a Yacht in Gig Harbor, Washington

House Boat, Gig Harbor, Washington – Reserve Today

This unique boat stay offers two en‑suite staterooms, a cozy living area, optional kayaks for paddling to nearby eateries (like Tides Tavern or Anthony’s), and upper‑deck views of sunsets and Mount Rainier. We were fortunate enough to have her out for part of our stay and that was a real treat.

Guests can paddle the harbor in supplied kayaks, exploring the scenic shoreline or floating over to nearby dining options such as Tides Tavern or Anthony’s. The fully equipped galley makes light fare a delightful affair, while the upper deck calls for evening cocktails amid panoramic views of Mount Rainier and the sparkling harbor.

Perfect for those seeking a distinctive stay that effortlessly fuses history, waterfront relaxation, and a dash of adventure.

2. All Aboard: A Historic Caboose in Glacier Country

Luxury Caboose, Izaak Walton Inn, Essex, Montana

Experience Montana’s rugged beauty from a cozy caboose. The Great Northern 411 caboose at The Issac Walton Inn boasts a queen-size bed, barn‑wood interiors adorned with antique barbed wire, and a unique upper‑bunk cupola offering a bird’s-eye view. Another option, located near Glacier National Park, provides a charming and characterful stay just minutes from hiking and nature. It’s available year round. We went for part of our winter adventures trip and our Caboose was covered in snow.

Check out the unique Luxury Caboose “J.J.” at the Izaak Walton Inn for a one-of-a-kind glamping experience near Glacier National Park.

This is the caboose-style lodging option—an elegantly renovated railcar offering a cozy kitchen, bedroom with a unique cupola bunk, travertine-and-marble bathroom, and rustic wood interiors.

3. Sleep comfortably under the stars in a safari-style tent at Under Canvas Glacier

Sleep comfortably under the stars in a safari-style tent at Under Canvas Glacier

Just seven miles from Glacier National Park’s entrance, Under Canvas offers safari-inspired tents with king-size beds, en-suite bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, and organic bath products—an elevated camping experience that blends comfort with nature’s grandeur. Kids can even get their own “kids tent”. Guests rave about the food, staff, amenities, and rustic elegance. My son loved the camp s’mores nightly.

4. Glamping on Elk Ridge – A Montana Hideaway Near Glacier National Park

Glamping on Elk Ridge, Glacier National Park

If you’re looking for a basecamp for Glacier National Park that’s more memorable than a standard hotel, Elk Ridge is a standout. It’s affordable (starting around $100/night), close to adventure, and offers just the right amount of rustic flair. In short—it’s real Montana, wrapped in comfort. Wake to the sound of birdsong, sip coffee by your fire pit, and set out for a day of exploration in Glacier National Park. Then return at night to a warm bed under the stars and play with the multitudes of animals on sight. For travelers who love nature but still appreciate a soft landing at the end of the day, Elk Ridge might just be the hidden gem of Martin City, Montana, just eight miles from the West Entrance of Glacier National Park.

This 10-acre retreat is named for the elk that often wander through the property, and it’s the kind of stay that beautifully blends Montana wilderness with cozy creature comforts. While this stay is closer to camping style than Under Canvas, this location and price point can’t be beat. Want to plan a last minute getaway, but don’t have your Glacier National Park entry pass this place gets you close enough to wake up early (be at the park gate by 5:30am) and enter Glacier as the sun rises. Plus it’s a little easier on the bank account but just as unique.
